THE BUYER’S COST GUIDE

What will your manufacturing run actually cost?

Start with the full run, then work back to the unit. A low unit price only helps if the quantity, included work and total cash requirement fit your project.

By the Comanufactured editorial team · Reviewed September 20, 2026 · Our research approach

Manufacturing spend is one part of the budget.

There is no single reliable price for “a supplement.” Formula, fill weight, run size, packaging and the work you expect the manufacturer to do change the scope. A tolling quote generally prices the manufacturing work using materials you supply; a turnkey quote can include more of the purchasing and coordination. Ask each company to define its scope.

Planning budget = quoted manufacturing + materials you buy + separately quoted services + delivery and applicable taxes. Mark an unresolved line as unknown. Do not treat it as $0.

Formula development
Is the formula ready to manufacture, or does it need development, evaluation or samples? Ask which work is one-time.
Ingredients
Who purchases them? Confirm specifications, supplier minimums, overage and responsibility for unused materials.
Manufacturing
Identify the batch, fill weight, quantity and operations included. Check whether blending and packout are part of the price.
Packaging
Separate printed film, bottles, caps, labels, cartons and other packaging from the work of filling them. Confirm artwork and tooling costs.
Setup and additional SKUs
Ask about fees per formula, flavor, size or packaging change. A minimum for one SKU may not cover several smaller runs.
Testing and release
Ask which tests and documents are included and what additional work your product requires. Get any separate charges in writing.
Freight, storage and tax
Confirm where the quote ends, shipping responsibilities and any charges outside manufacturing.

Ask the right cost questions for your format.

Fully scoped public prices have not been established for the researched powder, gummy and capsule offers. A manufacturer’s minimum or a stock product price does not supply the missing custom manufacturing cost. Request pricing for the same specification, quantity and unit.

BUSINESS-SUPPLIED EXAMPLE · NOT A MARKET AVERAGE

StickPax: $4,000–$6,000 for 7,500 sticks.

This representative scenario covers powder stick packs, 1–12 g, one formula and flavor, with customer-supplied ingredients and packaging. Manufacturing takes place through EnviroStar. The range varies within the stated fill-weight scope; it is a planning estimate, not a confirmed quote.

$0.53–$0.80 per stick
Manufacturing-only unit range, rounded from the total.

Included: Blending, filling/sealing and retail packout.

Excluded: Ingredients, printed film and secondary packaging; analysis, samples, formulation, sourcing, testing, freight and taxes.

Additional setup in this scenario: $0. This does not establish setup pricing for other formulas, flavors or manufacturers.

For a hypothetical 30-stick retail pack, 7,500 sticks equal 250 packs before any yield adjustment. That is about $16–$24 of manufacturing per retail pack, before ingredients, packaging and the other exclusions. A “per stick” price and a “per retail pack” price describe different units.

A minimum order needs a unit and a scope.

Ask whether the minimum applies per formula, flavor, package size or total purchase. Sticks, bottles and kilograms are different order bases. Confirm how many servings and finished retail packs that quantity creates for your product.

For example, Natural Alternatives International publishes a minimum of 10,000 bottles or bags for its high-volume manufacturing offering. StickPax’s example starts at 7,500 individual sticks for one formula and flavor. Those quantities cannot be compared as if each unit were the same product. A larger run can spread fixed charges over more units, but it also commits more cash and inventory. Request quotes at quantities you can fund and use; do not assume every increase in quantity lowers the unit price.

Make two quotes answer the same questions.

  1. Use the same product specification. Align the formula, dose, fill weight, packaging and required testing.
  2. Use the same production quantity and unit. Compare total spend at that quantity before comparing unit prices.
  3. Separate included, excluded and unknown. A partial manufacturing quote cannot establish which finished product is cheaper.
  4. Separate first-run charges from repeat-run charges. Ask what changes on a reorder and what still depends on material prices.
  5. Confirm payment timing. Ask when deposits, material purchases and final balances are due. Total price and upfront cash are different decisions.
  6. Confirm the production clock. Ask whether timing starts at order placement, formula approval or receipt and approval of all materials.

Cost is the starting point. Before committing, confirm the producing facility, applicable quality documents and technical fit. A registration or general compliance statement is not interchangeable with a scoped, current certification.

Give manufacturers enough information to price the fit.

Send your product format, formula readiness, fill weight or serving size, target quantity and unit, budget, packaging responsibilities and desired timing. State which details are still undecided. Describe the project without sharing confidential formula details before you have an agreed process.

If your budget has a hard ceiling, explain whether that ceiling covers manufacturing alone or the full project. This helps a manufacturer respond to the actual constraint.
