Private label vs custom supplement manufacturing: choose your starting point
Decide what must be unique about your product, then ask what the manufacturer already offers. The formula choice and who supplies the materials are two separate decisions.

Start with the formula decision.
An existing stock or private-label formula gives you a specific product to evaluate. Ask for its current specification, permitted branding and packaging choices, and what can change without turning it into a development project. Terms such as white label and private label are used differently by companies; ask what the actual offer includes.
Custom manufacturing starts with your own formula or an agreed development brief. Confirm which party develops it, how sample revisions are handled, when the specification becomes final and who controls the formula and supporting records. “Custom” alone does not establish exclusivity or ownership.
Define what changes in each format.
For stick packs, ask whether an existing powder formula fits your fill weight and film configuration. For jarred or pouched powders, confirm flavor, serving weight and pack size. For gummies, discuss the formula, gummy base, shape and flavor. For capsules, confirm the formula, shell and capsules per serving.
Treat each requested change as a scoping question. Ask whether it adds development, samples, tooling, testing, packaging purchases or a new minimum. Do not assume a stock formula can be adapted without additional work.
Then decide who supplies and coordinates the work.
Tolling generally describes manufacturing work with materials supplied by the customer. Turnkey proposals may include purchasing ingredients and packaging, development and coordination, but the term does not guarantee every service is included. Ask for an itemized scope.
StickPax’s published scenario covers manufacturing through EnviroStar using customer-supplied ingredients and packaging. NutraCap publishes distinct company-wide white-label and custom-formula bottle minimums. These examples illustrate different offers; they are not interchangeable price or timing benchmarks.
- Who owns the formula and can move it to another producer?
- Who buys ingredients and packaging, and who owns unused stock?
- Which development, testing and release work is included?
- What changes on a reorder, and what requires a fresh quote?
Choose against your launch constraints.
Evaluate an existing formula when it meets your product requirements and the permitted customization is enough. Evaluate custom development when the formula is central to your product and you can fund the required work and schedule. Neither route is automatically cheaper or faster for every project.
Send your non-negotiable requirements, available budget, intended quantity and timing in one brief. Ask manufacturers to explain the tradeoffs in their proposal. Comanufactured reviews requests and confirms interest before arranging an introduction; a researched listing is not a commitment to manufacture.
